I started Clearwater Modeling and Photography Group for two reasons:

1. To play and make new friends. There is nothing quite like hanging around a bunch of creative minds and exchanging ideas and techniques. We can all learn, play, explore, and enjoy our love of photography in an organized, friendly manner.
2. To Teach: I have had over 100 requests in the past two years to host workshops all the way from Miami to Seattle, WA. I have hosted several one-on-one workshops and I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to help a fellow photographer. I wanted to be able to have group workshops that were affordable and valuable to budding artists. I wanted to teach the way I would have like to have taught back in my early days.
3. To learn: I learn from so many people. Little tips and tricks that turn that light bulb on in my head. No matter how seasoned a photographer may be, there is always room for growth and learning. I see myself as always in a state of becoming. (got that from a buddhist book and I claimed it).

I tossed around whether to have a meet and greet or just come out swinging with a photoshoot for our first meetup. I opted for the shoot, of course, so we could meet one another and do what we love to do: Shoot.

Our first photoshoot was inspired by one of my favorite fashion photographers, Emily Soto. I love the soft and faded look in some of her photos. It’s not for every shoot but it definitely has its place and I thought it would be a great idea to introduce the group to “shooting through things.”

Again, it depends on your concept and what you’re shooting but shooting through various items can really add some soft spunk to your imagery. I usually hold the items at arm’s length in front of my lens but sometimes real close like in this picture.

As the organizer of the group, I was busy checking people in and going over a few photo tips and tricks so I didn’t get to shoot much. I took several shots of Rachel and wanted to show how shooting through different colored flowers can create different effects on similar images. I also wanted to show some different editing styles that can make similar photos look so different from one another. Very little post processing was done on the images below. Just a little curves and minor skin healing. I used some plastic, pink flowers I picked up at Michaels.

I desaturated this picture just a tad.

I like the soft black and white look and am a big fan of Silver Efex Pro

Our meetup group is growing weekly and we will soon be scheduling workshops on lighting, posing, taking killer macro wedding ring shots, and post processing.

We will go over skin retouching/healing techniques including the high pass, low pass technique, using curves to add light and depth, and dodge and burn to name a few.

I love being able to change the hue and saturation in an image and it’s really pretty easy. We’ll go over different ways to do that too!

Lighting: Light is light but there are so many different ways to shape it!

They brought their four-legged family member, Whiner, to the shoot but he found the squirrels much more interesting than my camera. It was hilarious to watch the squirrel “stare down” matches and the way the squirrels would taunt the poor guy. We did, however, manage to convince Whiner that getting his picture taken meant more hugs and a few treats and you know how persuasive that can be!

Faith was all Heidi Klum but Kaeden had other plans. He started out all giggly and smiles but his patience wore out when he realized that we were using up some of his e-trade time. He wasn’t having any of it. We captured some memories on our family shoot. Some all giggles and laughter, some….not so much.

This is Whiner, a four-legged member of the family.

Alecia and I share our love of animals. Whiner was more interested in the squirrels than the camera but I can’t say that I blame him.
